No serious people have ever seriously considered the full scale integration of Georgia, as well as Ukraine or Moldova in EU/NATO. This attitude as well as it's disastrous outcome is vividly explained in Boris Johnson's recent op-ed https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/01/30/boris-johnson-putin-nato-ukraine/. With war in Ukraine this situation has drastically changed. The process which so far has been leading nowhere is significantly accelerated. Let us ask the question: what is the result of this war which Ukrainians would consider if not utterly victorious but just comparatively acceptable: would even let say total restoration of Ukrainian control over Donetsk an Luhansk (which is hardly achievable) compensate the huge human and infrastructural devastation, inflicted on the country? The answer is NO. Something must be added here. Something, which is easier to promise than to implement. Clearly this something is EU/NATO membership.
This is the point, where the pathway to the 'Promised Land' for Ukraine and Georgia splits in two. Granting Georgia the same prize would devalue the whole thing. That is where the story of 'declining democracy' originates, despite the huge advantage of Georgia over other candidates (and not only) according to any measurable criteria.
All conscious players over here or outside do understand this. No one seriously recon that the overdose death of poor Lekso Lashkarava (RIP) has anything to do with EU membership candidacy. Of course, no one is going to admit to Georgians (who are btw crazy about EU) that they have been led by the nose for 30 years. Naturally the government is to be blamed and that is why it goes beyond anyone's idiocy, though there are plenty of idiots on every side. The game is so serious that even Zelensky is actively involved, although he has much more grave concerns around. Even Maya Sandu, who has not managed to escape CIS yet, is kicking our asses, which can't be on her own, one might guess.
Opposition here in Georgia which is an assembly of complete wrecks and has no chances for any electoral success will try to monetize this situation into political revenge without elections. As for government, they have just two options left:
#1 Go on with servile attitude and promising that they will improve soon, which gives them no guarantees of keeping power #2 Take a stance of patriots, who finally, after 30 years of servility to Others, first time in recent history find courage to follow "National Interests"- which they try to do.
The destabilization is the simple and universal solutions of this problem - it eliminates not only problem, but the very agenda itself. Vova would appreciate that.
